About Calliope English

Katherine Oddy, founder of Calliope English

Founder

Calliope English was founded by Katherine, an experienced secondary English teacher with a strong background in curriculum leadership, assessment, and individualised student support. After several years teaching English Language and Literature in both classroom and intervention settings, she established Calliope English to offer high-quality, academically rigorous tuition tailored to the needs of individual students.

Her professional experience includes leading curriculum transitions, internally moderating coursework, and supporting students through high-stakes examinations. She has worked closely with a wide range of learners, from high-attaining students aiming for top grades to those requiring confidence-building, structured intervention, or alternative pathways into success. This breadth of experience informs every aspect of her tutoring practice.

Why Calliope?

In Greek mythology, Calliope is the muse of epic poetry, eloquence, and elevated expression. She was regarded as the chief of the Muses, associated not only with beautiful language but with thoughtfulness, persuasion, and intellectual depth. Calliope was believed to inspire poets, writers, and thinkers to shape ideas with clarity, purpose, and moral weight.

Unlike muses linked purely to performance or ornament, Calliope represents language as a way of thinking and understanding the world. Her influence speaks to structure, coherence, and meaning — the careful shaping of ideas so that they can be communicated with precision and intent.

The name reflects the principles behind this work. At its heart, Calliope is about helping learners express ideas clearly, think carefully, and engage deeply with language. It reflects a belief that strong outcomes come from more than technique alone: they emerge from purpose, structure, and a respectful understanding of each learner as an individual.

The Calliope Approach

Inspired by the muse of eloquence and shaped by real classroom experience, this approach places purpose, clarity, and care at the heart of learning.
