How Tuition with Calliope Works

A clear, calm structure — built around the student

Tuition is delivered through a consistent weekly routine: focused teaching, targeted practice, and feedback that is easy to act on. Sessions are tailored to the student’s goals and current level, but the process remains stable so students know exactly what to expect each week.

You can begin at any point in the academic year. After an initial consultation, we agree a programme (Foundation, Rhetoric, or Mastery), set priorities, and schedule a regular weekly session.

Choose and Contact a Tutor

We recommend reviewing our tutor profiles to identify the tutor best suited to your needs, whether that is coursework support, exam preparation, or English as an Additional Language requirements. Once you have chosen a tutor, you can contact them directly to discuss availability and next steps.

Step 1

Initial Consultation

Before tuition begins, we start with a short consultation (parent and student where appropriate). This helps us understand:

  • current course / exam board and timeline

  • strengths, gaps, and confidence barriers

  • what “success” looks like (grades, coursework, exam technique, independence, aspirations and future goals)

If you already have a programme in mind, that is absolutely fine — the consultation simply ensures the plan is realistic and well-matched.

Step 2

Weekly Sessions

Each session is structured and purposeful. A typical lesson might include:

  • Explicit teaching (new skill, concept, or technique)

  • Guided practice (model → supported → independent attempt)

  • Retrieval and recap (to secure learning over time)

  • Next steps (clear weekly targets)

Lessons are designed to build confidence and accuracy over time, rather than relying on last-minute cramming.

Step 3

Between Sessions

Support between lessons depends on your programme:

  • Foundation: weekly written targets and structured practice focus

  • Rhetoric: weekly marked work with clear, examiner-informed feedback

  • Mastery: the full package plus performance tracking and a monthly parent update

(Full details are on each programme page.)

Online tutoring: platform and set-up

What students need

  • a laptop/desktop is strongly recommended (tablet can work, but is less effective for extended writing)

  • stable internet and headphones (if possible)

  • a quiet workspace and a notebook

Platform

All online tuition runs through Google Meet, supported by Google Workspace tools. This keeps everything simple, secure, and accessible across devices.

How resources are shared
Resources and homework tasks may be shared through Google tools (e.g. documents or slides) so that students can revisit explanations, track targets, and build a record of improvement.

Marking and feedback

The level and style of feedback provided depends on the purpose of the work.

For coursework or non-examined assessment, feedback is delivered in line with strict exam-board regulations, especially for First Language English 0990/0500/0524 where feedback must remain general rather than directive. Here, I do not identify exact errors, rewrite sections, or tell students precisely what to change.

Instead, feedback highlights areas for review (for example, sentence control, use of evidence, or punctuation), and the underlying skill is then revisited in the session. Students are supported to identify and correct issues independently, ensuring full compliance and long-term skill development.

For all other work (including exam-style responses, practice essays, skills-based writing, and non-assessed tasks) feedback is provided at examiner level.

This may include:

  • detailed annotations

  • mark-band commentary

  • modelling of high-level responses

  • explicit explanation of how marks are awarded and 'lost'

This allows students to understand precisely how examiners assess work, while still developing the independence required for timed examinations.

Communication with Parents

For KS3 and KS4, parent communication is welcomed and encouraged. For KS5, communication is typically student-led unless a parent update is requested.

Mastery includes a monthly parent report summarising progress, targets, and next steps.

Scheduling, payment, and cancellations

Scheduling

Tuition is booked as a regular weekly slot wherever possible, as consistency produces the strongest outcomes.

Payment

Payment is taken in advance (weekly or monthly — depending on your preference), and you will receive confirmation of your booked slot.

Cancellations

If you need to cancel, please provide as much notice as possible. Where notice is limited, a session may not be refundable, but every effort is made to be fair and reasonable where circumstances are unavoidable.
